We are Kraut og Koala!

Mario and Jaraya met while working together in Berlin in 2014. After living in Copenhagen for two years, we moved to Ærø in 2020, and now in 2022 we are excited to open our first business together on this beautiful island.

We strongly believe that whether you are sitting in a fine dining restaurant, picking up a quick lunch at a café, or having a meal delivered to your home, food can and should bring joy, and not cost the earth!

We love what we do, and we hope we can continue doing it for many years to come! But working in gastronomy, we have come to realise that more needs to be done at a local level to ensure that we can both enjoy good food, and also leave a better planet behind us.

Our answer to source as much local produce as possible, and use as much of that product as we can.

So while our menu might be rooted in the nostalgia of our own homelands, the ingredients are even more local than we are!

 

 The Kraut

Mario is a born and bred Berliner, and began his career as a chef as an apprentice at the prestigious Ritz Carlton Berlin.

But Mario didn’t just stop at becoming a chef. He has also studied Hotel Management and Brewery and Beverage Technology - so not only does he know how to cook your food, he also knows which beer should go with it, and likes serving it all with a smile!

 

The Koala

Jaraya first dipped her toe in hospitality as a barista during her studies at university. Her passion for good coffee and service then led her to Berlin, where she honed her skills at the specialty café and roastery, The Barn.

While living in Copenhagen, Jaraya worked for the Kadeau Restaurant group, where she was able to learn more about both traditional and modern danish techniques and ingredients.

Jaraya is looking forward to bringing a warm sense of Australian hospitality to Ærøskøbing harbour, as well as some tasty Aussie treats!
